What is Counselling?

At the heart of any relationship is communication. Helpers need a range of communication skills to become collaborators with their clients(Egan, 2019, p.13)

Everyone experiences counselling differently – nobody will say that their experience is ever the same. It’s a process through which one enters in order to address any problems that they may have. Counselling can take many directions and forms but there are always common elements that everyone will have in common.

Counselling usually happens at a set time, at a set place on a weekly basis (although this is flexible) here at Evelyn Counselling as we will do all we can to ensure your comfort given that entering into counselling will require a commitment to self and a commitment to helping you understand why it is where you are in life right now.

A key element of the counselling process is the development of the theraputic relationship that you will have with your professional therapist. It is important that you feel comfortable with your therapist, and they will check in with you on a regular basis to ensure that you are feeling comfortable with them and the development of the theraputic relationship.

During a session, your therapist may take you through specific exercises designed to help with your problem, or you might have more general discussions about how you’re feeling. What you talk about will vary depend on what you want help with and the therapist’s approach. It could include:

  • your relationships
  • your childhood
  • your feelings, emotions or thoughts
  • your behaviour
  • past and present life events
  • situations you find difficult
